Stopped in on our way back to Omaha from Chicago. Didn't want McDonalds or Arby's or anything like that. We try to stop at local businesses hoping for better food, better quality...and to support small business. Didn't know what to expect with stopping in at the Cottage Bakery. First off, the employees there were very helpful, friendly and willing to answer any questions we had. It is mostly for catering and to-go orders, so don't expect to dine-in easily at tables and booths. There are two small couches and a coffee table, so if it's unoccupied, you can eat your lunch there. Which I did. And it was just fine. Ordered a Roast Beef Panini -- roast beef, red onion, banana peppers, jalapeños, horseradish cream spread. Pretty good. We finished the meal off with one of their turtle brownies. Pretty rich. Dense. Not cakey -- more like a cross between a block of fudge and a brownie. They were out of the white chocolate raspberry brownies. :( All-in-all, it was a good meal. Better than fast food, for sure. If you want a well-made panini from a friendly staff and a nice choice of baked goods for dessert, definitely stop in.

The pecan rolls are awesome. The breakfast burritos are awesome. They are stuffed with scrambled eggs, potatoes, and veggies and your choice of meat (or no meat): bacon, sausage, or bacon and sausage. Improvements: 1. More pecan rolls! I hate it when they run out on Saturday mornings. 2. More of the sausage only breakfast burritos. They always seem to run out of those first. 3. Better parking, but I don't think they can do anything about that. I miss them at their old location. 4. Saturday soup?

I had a cheesecake brownie that was on the fudgy side. I prefer more cake like brownies but it was still really yummy. Also had a snicker doodle cookie that was awesome.

I lived in Iowa City for about ten years and occasionally ate at The Cottage. To me, the place was OK. I was never blown away, but never disappointed. However, I recently had a very poor experience with the company that I believe should be shared. My fiancee and I are currently living in Chicago. We recently set up a number of meetings with potential vendors for our wedding and then took time off work to return to Iowa City (where our wedding will be set) and visit with them. We arrived at the Cottage while they were in mid-move. Nothing was together. Not a seat or a table to conduct our scheduled consultation. No samples prepared. All we got were confused looks when we entered the shop. Then a request to come back another day. We were in town from Chicago, mind you. I fully understand that mistakes can be made. Despite having called a day earlier to confirm the new address, perhaps there was a scheduling error. I don't know. But I was thoroughly disappointed at the utter lack of apology for having wasted our time. And given our long-distant planning situation, our time is very precious. I have no idea how a company could survive for so long with such a poor understanding of customer service. On the up side, they did make our decision rather easy.

alright, i think we just found the place that has the best sandwiches in town. outside and in, you think their specialty is just cupcakes and pastries, but do try the sandwiches/paninis. the roast beef sandwich w/ horseradish sauch & sprouts was the tastiest thing i've had in a while (that is a sandwich) - i think they called it the Nate something. there is limited parking outside (4 tight spots), and the place is sorta hard to find (on the corner of Benton & Gilbert). keep in mind their address is 230 East Benton St (Yelp needs to update the address)

Not as good as remember. My husband brought me home a pecan carmel roll this am and it was awful! Carmel was burnt and hard. Yuk!

I was really disappointed in The Cottage this week. My friend is at the burn unit at the U of I hospitals with her daughter. Since she doesn't have a car, and doesn't really want to leave her daughter alone, she is stuck in the hospital, eating hospital food. So I figured I'd call in a delivery order from The Cottage since I remembered back in college they had pretty good sandwiches and stuff, and offered delivery. I placed a small order for a few box lunches so her and her husband could have lunch and dinner for a couple days. Nothing more than a handful of college students coming in for lunch would've ordered. Not a big order. Admittedly, I am on the West Coast, so when I sent my email order they had already closed, and when I called no one answered. In the email I requested they call me upon opening the next day to get my credit card info and confirm the order. Instead I got an email an hour and a half from their next day's closing time thanking me for trying to order, that they would've loved to have fulfilled it, but that they were already closing for the day. I'm not sure what part of "Place this order as soon as possible" escaped them but it seems a bit strange in these tough economic times to just throw out business, when, in fact, they could've just filled the order that morning. They did complete other deliveries that day. Just not mine. But I don't live in Iowa City, and I didn't really have time to figure out who else delivers non-pizza food. So I called to see if I could get the order done that day. No dice. But they promised me that although they were closed for NYE and NY Day, they'd deliver it the next day. Good, because the day after that my friend's daughter was going into surgery and she wouldn't be in her room to accept the delivery. I was a little, let's say surprised, when I didn't get a "thank you" from my friend the day after NY but figured she was preoccupied with her little girl. I did, however, get one on the 3rd. Why? Because The Cottage delivered the order 5 days after I placed it, and one day after they said it would be delivered. Fortunately her daughter was just getting out of surgery and the deliver arrived just as they got back to her room. But 10 minutes earlier and it would've been a go-back because she was in the waiting room all morning. Really disappointing that they couldn't get it together to deliver 5 combos of a sandwich/side/cookie on time. The food was good, but the next food basket I sent my friends in Iowa City (which will happen as I still have a few friends there, having babies, living their lives) will not be from The Cottage.

Excellent, friendly customer service. Good food at reasonable prices. My new stop on our morning walks.

The Cottage does not know a thing about customer service. We drove 3.5 hours from Chicago to keep a wedding cake consultation appointment that we had set up with them. When we got to the store, the place was not together at all which is understandable since they had just moved into their new location. BUT we had called the day before our meeting to confirm their new address for the meeting and no one informed us that they needed to cancel the appointment or suggest a different meeting location. And when we showed up ON TIME all the employees (including the manager) looked at us confused as if we were trespassing since they were clearly closed. After they realized we were there for a scheduled appointment, the manager looked at us and said "Well, I don't even have a place for us to sit down and talk" and did not offer any solution. When we pointed out that we had called the day before to confirm the address and the appointment, she snapped "Well I wouldn't have scheduled the appointment if I didn't think we'd be further along in our move". And that was it. No apology. No admission of wrong. No samples of wedding cake even! When we asked if we could have some samples to go so that our visit was not completely futile, she almost laughed and said that they don't give samples of their cake during wedding consultations. That we would have had to schedule another appointment after the first to come back and taste their product. All in all it was a horrible experience. They are unorganized, unbusinesslike, and unprofessional.

We were in town for my brother's graduation and stopped by here for a quick late afternoon snack and to feed my son. I love small bakeries like Cottage. The staff couldn't have been more gracious and their prices are beyond reasonable. $1.50 for three scones and also for four pieces of cornbread? WOW! The cornbread had pieces of corn in it and was really good. The scones come in both savory and sweet choices. I didn't partake in their sweets, but the selection of cheesecakes, cakes and other goodies looked very good.

The Cottage used to be just that...a cottage with a warm sweet atmosphere where you could get a decent sandwich. The City put in a giant parking ramp of doom, and while the Cottage is still named after it's original digs, it's now a big, trendy place with skyhigh ceilings and a more modern look. For the longest time, I was pretty bitter about the change. The food wasn't as good, the atmosphere seemed cold by comparison, and I didn't think it would last. I was wrong, and I admit it. In the last year or so, the menus have changed a bit, and the food is back on track. Try a hot panini type sandwich thing. They're the best. The service can be slow, but only because they're making your food for you on the spot. The owners/managers of this joint are friendly ae best.nd dependable. I've used them extensively for work events, and they are more than accomodating. They do a great job at catering, though I recommend that you overorder, as The Cottage can skimp a bit on portions. Overall, a nice place for lunch, and a good caterer. Well done!

I've only purchased a few items from this bakery one of them being a Chocolate Silk Pie. Which I loved. I saw their big print pies on their windows and decided to stop in and order a pie. Only disappointment was that I had to pre-order the pie and remember to come back and pick it up. I their understand pies are made fresh. We ended up sharing the Silk pie with a few family members and they also loved the Silk pie. I'll be purchase another pie soon. I also got their 7 layer bar which was very good too. I did try one of their cold salads and wasn't too impressed but then again I was wanting something sweet.

For a small business, you would think they would be flexible as a caterer. Instead, they have rigid minimums and do not allow for variety when ordering. We recently had The Cottage cater a baby shower, and they require 2 dozen of the same item. When hosting a party for 12-15 individuals, you are not allowed much variety in ordering trays. The woman on the phone was quite snappy and unapologetic for their policies. Next time, we'll be looking for a more flexible and courteous vendor.
